Routine cleanings improve your oral and overall health
Getting your teeth cleaned on a regular basis helps remove plaque and tartar buildup and prevent common oral health conditions like tooth decay and gum disease. But the benefits don’t stop there. Routine cleanings and dental exams can also help:
- Keep your teeth white and bright
- Reduce your chances of needing more expensive treatments and procedures
- Freshen bad breath
- Minimize your risk of tooth loss
- Improve your general health and reduce your risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease
What to expect from a cleaning and exam

We may recommend having x-rays taken to screen for less-visible oral health problems.
Remove Plaque and Tartar
We’ll use specialized tools to remove existing plaque from your teeth.
Buff and Polish
Buffing your teeth and using a polish will provide an even deeper cleaning to your teeth and gum line.
Floss
We can remove additional tartar in between the teeth with standard flossing.
Rinse
Your hygienist will rinse your mouth with water to flush out any leftover plaque or polish residue.
Fluoride
A protective fluoride solution will be applied to protect and enhance the health of your teeth.

Dental Cleaning FAQs
Do cleanings hurt at all?
At Jacobs Dental Group, your comfort is our priority. Professional cleanings are not invasive and don’t cause pain. We use powerful but gentle tools to thoroughly clean your teeth. You may feel some vibrations and minor pressure, but you shouldn’t feel any pain.
How often do I need to have my teeth cleaned?
In general, we recommend that patients come in for a routine cleaning and check-up every 6 months or so. In conjunction with good oral hygiene habits like daily brushing and flossing, twice-per-year cleanings will help keep your smile healthy and beautiful for years to come.
What do I need to do after my cleaning?
At the end of your appointment, we’ll give you some basic instructions to follow to help maintain your newly fresh smile. In general, we recommend waiting about 30 minutes to eat or drink and avoiding very hot or very cold foods for a few hours after your appointment. We’ll also give you helpful tips and advice for brushing and flossing.
